Aa Saint-Omer Golf Club sits in the River Aa valley, right on the edge of the Regional Natural Park of the Caps and Opal Marsh in northern France. It's the only course in France designed by Dutch golfer Joan Frederik Dudok van Heel and you can feel that valley routing straight away, with holes played on both sides of the slope and big, open views across the marshes.

You've got 27 holes in total. The main event is the championship course, a regular European Challenge Tour venue, plus a shorter academy course that's handy for a loosen-up before your tee time. In my opinion, it's the sort of layout that asks you to think, not just lash driver all day. Expect plenty of elevation change, thoughtful hole variety and a few moments where course management is worth more than brute force.

It's also ranked among the top 30 courses in Northern France and the location is a big win for a quick break, with Calais an easy drive for UK golfers coming over.

When you're done, Saint-Omer is well worth a wander. It's a historic town with plenty of architecture, culture and food markets, so you're not stuck in a resort bubble if you fancy a proper French evening out.

Who is this for?

Golfers after a northern France break with proper championship pedigree, quick access from Calais and enough off-course options in Saint-Omer to keep everyone happy.

Who is it best for?

Mid-handicappers and better who enjoy elevation, variety and a course that rewards sensible strategy, plus groups building a short tour across the region.

Golf Courses at Aa Saint-Omer Golf Club

Le Val Course

Le Val is Aa Saint-Omer's showpiece, and is a stunning par-73 layout that will provide a stern challenge for even the most skilled player. Measuring 6,218 yards, Le Val is renowned regionally and nationally for its immaculate condition and is carved beautifully through the woodland of the undulating landscape. As a regular stop on the European Tour and previous host to the French PGA Championship, Saint-Omer is a prestigious venue, and is a certain highlight of any golf holiday in France's Northern area.

“This is a lovely golf course. It is very hilly, but that makes it interesting with your club selection. The greens had just been hollow tined when we played it, but you could tell if they hadn’t been, they would have been pure as.” - Mark Crossfield, PGA Professional

Preceding days of rain made the course very wet and playing long and the greens were microtined and not great. Good course but this area often wet this time of year and so better to play it at another time.

Fantastic course in great condition but extremely slow round of golf.

Mixed response for this one in terms of the level of difficulty. Some would like to return and a few found it just too difficult. We were held up by two slow groups and 5 1/4 hours was not welcomed.

Had the first 9 holes to ourselves. Course was in fantastic condition with perfect greens! Still my perfect go to french track and always look forward to our visit there.

Had played the course a few times before and would certainly play it again. Only 1/2 hour from Calais. Lovely staff, small clubhouse/pro shop.

Superb course, but don't walk it!!! Superb greens and general upkeep is great. A real good test for all levels of golfer. Played 4 times I a week and still never worked some of the greens out.

Brilliant golf course which I have had the pleasure of playing many times over the last twenty years , would recommend a buggy as it is physically challenging. I rate this course very highly.

The best course condition of the 3. You need a buggy!!!! Not for the unfit!!!

Super course but the cost of the buggies, which you defiantly need, is high. It’s a tough course to walk.

We all had a fantastic weekend, the golf course was in great condition for early season, and the greens were fast and true. We will be back again soon.
