Royal Golf du Hainaut isn't the first name people drop when they talk Belgian golf, but if you're driving across Belgium with clubs in the boot, it's a cracking stop-off. The course sits out in the Hainaut region, away from the busier hotspots, which is often a bonus if you want a proper round without the fuss. I'll admit that I'm a sucker for courses that reward accuracy over brute force, and this one fits the bill nicely.
Course-wise, you're getting a thoughtful, strategic parkland test rather than a "stand up and belt it" layout. The fairways move through a mix of mature woodland and more open holes, with a few elevation changes that keep club selection interesting. Water features on a handful of holes and it's genuinely in play when you get out of position, so you'll need to pick a line and commit.
The greens are generally true and well kept, with enough movement to make you concentrate on your reads without turning it into a putting lottery. As a result, Royal du Hainaut tends to suit golfers who enjoy plotting their way round, taking the sensible miss and picking moments to be brave. Mid to low handicappers will find plenty to think about without feeling like the course is working against them.
If you're building a Belgian itinerary, this is a handy "between bases" course, and a strong alternative to the more heavily played venues further north. The clubhouse offers solid facilities and a welcoming atmosphere, making it easy to settle in for a post-round drink and a proper debrief. The location also gives you flexibility, sitting within striking distance of other quality courses in the region.
Who is this for? Golfers travelling through Belgium who want a quality round without reshaping the whole trip around one venue, especially if you're routing via Spa or Waterloo.

Designed by the esteemed English golf architect, Tom Simpson, Hainaut was completed in 1938, and features immaculate fairways and greens which are bordered by impressive woodland.
If you select the back tees, the championship course measures 6,626 yards, and while that is not particularly long by modern standards, the par of 72 is tough to match.
With the addition of a further nine holes, called L'Etang, the Royal Golf Club du Hainaut is now even more adaptable, and comes highly recommended during your next golfing tour of Belgium.

This was our first course visited. There are 3 nine hole courses, all through woodland and very pretty. The greens were average. It was the ideal course to start our tour off. Easy to get to, but be wary of the final turn off the main road, sharp left into a very narrow road. Only a 15 minute drive from Mons. A nice level course, with not too many ups & downs.
