Delta Hotels by Marriott Worsley Park Country Club sits on the edge of Manchester, combining a proper 18-hole parkland test with a full-service hotel and leisure complex. The course earned its stripes when it hosted a European Challenge Tour event in 2004 and has been refined steadily since, while the hotel itself occupies 200 acres of what was once the Duke of Bridgewater's private estate. You're close enough to Manchester city centre to make a night of it, with bars, restaurants and nightlife all within easy reach, but far enough out to enjoy genuine countryside golf without the urban sprawl.

The parkland layout is a fair but testing round that suits mixed-ability groups, with enough to keep better players interested without turning every slightly offline tee shot into a reload. Tree-lined corridors shape your tee shots and the greens reward good iron play, so it's not just about length off the tee. The driving range and putting green give you somewhere to loosen up before your round or work on the short game afterwards, and if you've got a mixed group, it's a good shout because you can make a full day of it. A warm-up on the range, 18 holes, then a drink and a reset in the leisure club tends to keep everyone happy, whether they're chasing a score or just enjoying the day out.

Off the course, the resort set-up really comes into its own. Non-golfers have plenty to do and golfers have an easy recovery plan with pool and spa time, then Manchester's bars and restaurants are a short drive away when you want to turn it into a proper weekend. Location-wise, Worsley Park sits just off the motorway network, making it straightforward to reach from across the North West and beyond.

Who is this for?
Golfers and groups who want an easy-to-reach Manchester base with countryside golf, strong leisure facilities and the option of city nightlife.

Who is it best for?
Societies, corporate days and mixed-ability groups who value comfort and variety as much as the golf.

Worsley Park Golf Club

At 6,611 yards from the championship tees, Worsley Park is not the longest tournament course around, but the work of European Golf Design, in conjunction with Michael King, has made it a good test that will be enjoyed by all those who visit. The strategic use of the existing features of the landscape has allowed the course to mature in harmony with its surroundings, giving it a mature feel.

The natural undulations, trees and water make for particularly tricky obstacles, and there is no doubt that course management and strategy are the most valuable qualities for those seeking to compile a good score. Worsley Park is also proud to have a 250-metre driving range, which is designed in line with USGA specifications.

Playing at Worsley Park, you may well spot the stars of Manchester United; in the past few years both Ryan Giggs and Sir Alex Ferguson have chosen to host their charity golf days here.

Accommodation at Delta Hotels by Marriott Worsley Park Country Club

A stay at Worsley Park is set up for golf breaks, but it works just as well if you're mixing golf with business or a city visit. The hotel has 158 rooms set within 200 acres of land that once formed the Duke of Bridgewater's private estate, so the backdrop is more green space than traffic, even though Manchester is close by.

Rooms are spacious and geared for an easy weekend away. You've got the everyday essentials covered, including satellite TV and high-speed internet, plus enough space to spread out your kit and settle in after 18 holes. For groups, it's the kind of place where you can keep everything in one base, golf, food, drinks and recovery, without organising taxis all weekend unless you want a night in town.

Food & Drink

Food and drink is straightforward and flexible. Cast Iron Grill is the main restaurant, built around a modern menu and regional ingredients, which suits that post-round appetite. Tempo is the go-to for breakfast and lighter bites during the day, popular for its morning spread and lunchtime sandwiches. Brew Bar Lounge is where most groups end up for a drink, whether that's afternoon tea, a pre-dinner pint or cocktails later on. With three spots to eat and drink, you can stay on-site all weekend and still mix it up.

Leisure Facilities

Leisure facilities are a genuine plus, especially if you're travelling with non-golfers or you've packed in back-to-back rounds. There's an on-site pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and whirlpool, plus a gym with cardio equipment and free weights. The Spa of Senses offers treatments such as massages, facials, scrubs, manicures and pedicures, ideal if your group is mixing golf with a bit of downtime.

If the weather turns, or you want to keep the competition going after dark, the Simulator Lounge adds an extra option with Trackman technology, so you can play a choice of famous courses indoors while ordering food and drinks and watching live sport on screen. It's a smart addition for winter evenings or groups who want to extend the golf beyond daylight hours, and it means you're not stuck in the bar if someone fancies another nine holes.

Right, if you fancy a Manchester golf break with a spa and an easy night out, include Worsley Park in your next UK golf break.

Brilliant Hotel & Food

Very enjoyable Sunday Saver. Fantastic hotel. All the ladies in my group thought the hotel was first class with accommodation, the food, the staff, and the bonus of the hotel being just two minutes from the motorway. We have been going on these trips for many years now and that was by far the best hotel we have stayed at.

Our stay at Worsley Park was very good. the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was also very good. Having said that we never received our £200 to spend in resort, we were given vouchers for 20% off at the bar instead.

Had a fabulous night with eight friends. The rooms were lovely and spacious, the food was lovely and the waiting staff were very attentive. The reception staff were very helpful except for one who shouted at us, her customer service skills need to be improved as she definitely let the team down.

Because of the rain we have had lately the course was very wet and boggy especially on Sunday after all the overnight rain we had

Great course. Very helpful staff, in the pro shop and on the course. The greens were in excellent condition. The weather was not too kind to us as it rained off and on when playing on Sunday but the sun shone on the Monday. The course is reasonably hard in that there is a lot of walking from green to the next tee, and some par 4 holes were real testers from a distance point of view. Just one point though, because of the distance between the green and next tee we found it difficult to find the correct direction, perhaps better signage is needed to avoid confusion. All in all a very good, enjoyable course to play.

Very VERY wet underfoot, but tees and greens were very good.

Fairways and tees were in excellent condition. The greens had all been spiked and heavily sanded, Not very good for putting on as all puts were bobbling a lot.

The rough was very penal. The greens were true but slow. The course is a challenge for the average player.

Sundays round was perfect, the course very quiet and we did our fourball in 3.5 hours. Much busier on the Monday (bank holiday) and the round was slower, an 1hour longer. Greens had been hollowtined but that's normal, at this time of year, otherwise course in excellent condition. Manageable for all quality of golfers except perhaps beginners as there is water to negotiate.

Despite there having been a lot of rain prior to our playing on the Sunday, the course was in very good condition, off the Yellows,it played long but was a fair test for all our handicaps which ranged from 10-22.The greens were difficult to read and played particulary slow but that didn't deter from a very enjoyable weekend and we will certainly return in the future.
