The Westerwood course is a Par 71 measuring 6,307 yards from the back tees and it's a modern resort test designed by Seve Ballesteros and Dave Thomas. It's also regularly mentioned as one of the best heathland layouts to open in Scotland in recent years, which tells you what to expect underfoot: springy turf, strategic bunkering and a course that rewards decent positioning rather than just swinging harder.
You'll see plenty of sand and a few water features shaping decisions from the tee, so it's not a driver-everywhere sort of round. If you're a mid-handicapper, the key is picking the right tees and keeping the ball in play. The holes tend to offer a sensible route in, but the moment you get greedy the hazards are waiting.
The routing takes full advantage of the natural contours at the base of the Campsie Hills, and there's enough variety in the test to keep stronger players engaged while giving higher handicappers a fair chance if they plot their way round sensibly. I'd call it challenging but fair, and exactly the kind of course where you'll enjoy the round even if you don't have your A-game.
What makes it work for groups is that stronger players can take on more carries and tighter lines, while those playing off higher handicaps can find a route without feeling like every hole is a survival exercise. The bunkering is strategic rather than penal, and the water comes into play often enough to make you think but not so much that it dominates the round.
It's a good fit for a weekend break because you can play it twice and still find new angles and challenges, particularly if the wind picks up. The course sees plenty of play year-round as a resort layout, so don't expect pristine tour-level conditions in the depths of winter, but it's well maintained and the heathland turf drains quickly after rain.

If you're travelling with non-golfers, it's an easy win: they can actually have a good day while you're out on the course, then everyone can meet back at the hotel to eat, have a drink and plan the next round. The hotel works well for groups, with enough communal space to gather after the round and the spa facilities give those sitting out a round something worthwhile to do.
Dining is available on site, which is handy if you want to stay put after a long day, but Glasgow is close enough for an evening out if you want more variety or a livelier atmosphere. The location really is the sweet spot: far enough out to feel like you've escaped the city, but near enough to the airport and city centre to make travel straightforward.

The hotel was a good standard generally for our group, nobody had any complaints about our rooms. All the staff we were in contact with were very helpful, smartly dressed and good natured. Breakfast was good with plenty variety for all tastes as was dinner with a couple of exceptions....The Cheese plate was appalling! 1 sliver of Brie & a slice of something else that was sweating from the time it had been out of the fridge, inedible to all that had it. Next night when ordering from the menu I mentioned the "cheese problem" and he said itll be the same again tonight! Also on the second night, two in our party were served much later than the rest of due to a mistake in the ordering process. They were both offered a drink to compensate and accepted the apology....and the drink.

The course is OK generally but could be better. Starters hut amd personnel were very good, buggeis were a good standard and clean. The course itself is in reasonable condition and the layout is quire good with some very challenging holes and soje quirky ones. Complaints if any would be the tracks and paths are very, very rutted and need a lot of work. Also, the rough is penal, you can easily lose a ball by being just off the fairway, sometimes there is no Semi so you're straight into the Thick, High stuff with no chance of recovering your ball! Tough for some who are higher handicappers.

This is a very well laid out course but in need of a lot of care and attention! Fairways a bit ‘bald’ in places! We used a buggy the second day as we found walking the course very tiring! Buggies have to stick to cart paths and these were full of pot holes and rubble making for a fairly uncomfortable ride! However the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and on the whole we did enjoy the experience!
