Since 1990, the Essex Golf and Country Club has built a reputation as one of the region's best golfing destinations, and as the courses mature, this will only continue to improve. Located less than 30 minutes from Colchester, a lively town which was the former 'Roman Britain', this is a great Staycation destination.
The 9 hole track is perfect for beginners, whilst the 18 hole championship course features strategically placed bunkers and requires some thought and accuracy, perfect for lower handicap golfers.

The 18-hole County Course is the signature of the Essex Golf and Country Club, and is a tremendous blend of challenging and enjoyable holes. When played from the championship markers, the layout measures some 6,907 yards, making power a serious advantage, particularly on the 5 par-5s which can offer good birdie chances.
The excellent design is fortunate to be supported by a fully computerised irrigation system which helps to keep the teeing areas and putting surfaces in pristine condition throughout the year. The best holes on the course bookend the start and end of your round, where it is essential to avoid the severe bunkers that guard the greens.
The Garden Course is a charming 9-hole course, which is kept in comparable condition to the formidable County layout. The mixture of challenging par-3s, tricky par-4s and a par-5 makes the Garden ideal for beginners and learners, but also represent some light relief for those who have tackled the ‘big course'.
In addition to the two golf courses, the Essex Golf & Country Club is one of the most complete practice and tuition destinations, featuring a 20-bay driving range, a specialised academy facility which boasts the latest video technology and even an indoor practice area. The qualified PGA professionals are on hand to provide expert guidance and tuition.
Guests enjoying the superb facilities on offer throughout this superb resort can relax in one of the 42 spacious guest bedrooms.
If the exertions of the Essex's facilities leave visitors tired, there is no doubt that they will enjoy the over-sized beds and comfortable surroundings. Added extras include satellite television and outstanding panoramic views across the golf course and the estate.
The outstanding gymnasium features the Technogym key system, including the new Excite range, and is one of the county's largest. The aerobic studio is home to scheduled classes like Body Pump, Tai Chi and Pilates, while there are also holistic and spinning studios.
Guests can relax in the swimming pool, steam room, sauna and sun beds, or play tennis on the six indoor and three outdoor courts. Those travelling with young families can leave the kids at the crèche while they take advantage of the superb facilities. The Sports Brasserie serves home-cooked classics in a comfortable clubhouse style.
The Strike Shack offers more than a driving range. Track every strike on a Toptracer-powered driving range, relax in comfortable heated bays and order some delicious food and drink as you watch the action unfold. You'll find a range of fun interactive game modes to try with friends and family that suit all ages and abilities.

Fantastic trip to the Essex golf and country club staff were very welcoming on arrival and tee off was on time the course was in fantastic condition especially the greens receptive and fast the only slight beef was the 4hrs 45 min round but the sun was out. Evening meal was good and all plates were empty. The rooms are a bit small and and hot but they were clean and functional breakfast was a bit poor but for the price u can’t grumble to much. The second round was a lot quicker just over 3 hrs all in all well worth a look

The hotel was comfortable although the layout on entering was a little strange having to go through a security barrier each time to get to the bar & restaurant.

Tight golf course with many hazards water, sand and lots of trees narrow fairways but the real gem was the greens receptive and fast. Played two rounds Sunday was so slow 4hrs 45 mins and Monday’s round was just over 3 hours so a lot better great driving range

If I lived close to the course I would be a member. The course was very playable with some difficulty in certain areas but a treat to play on. Play was a little slow on Wednesday but that is understandable as Wednesday is the Seniors competition day. Monday and Tuesday was perfect.

Unfortunately we were behind a club competition although it speeded up after 9 holes. The course was in pretty good condition considering the long dry spell & the greens were excellent.
