Tucked into the UNESCO-listed Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire, Telford Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort is a proper all-in-one base for a golf break that doesn't require long-haul travel or complicated logistics. The 6,741-yard parkland course, once known as the Great Hay Golf Club, now sits at the heart of the resort, backed up by 4-star bedrooms, a solid spa and on-site dining with views that do a lot of the heavy lifting after a long day on the fairways.

You're only around 40 minutes from Birmingham, so it's an easy win for a quick England golf break, whether that's a one-night dash or a couple of rounds with the lads. I'd call it the kind of place that keeps things simple: arrive, park up and you've got golf, food and a decent wind-down option without needing to drive anywhere else.

The setting is the standout. Even before you get into the golf, you'll notice the land has movement to it, which makes the course feel more varied than your typical hotel parkland track. The Ironbridge Gorge backdrop adds a real sense of occasion on a few holes, and the routing keeps the round moving nicely without ever feeling repetitive.

Who is this for?
Weekend golf groups, societies and couples who want an easy resort base near Birmingham with everything on-site.

Who is it best for?
Mixed-ability groups and mid-handicappers who like scenic parkland golf, plus anyone pairing golf with spa time.

Telford Golf Club

John Harris and Brian Griffiths conceived the design of the layout, using the natural woodland to demarcate the holes, and fashioning strategic water features that make course management of the utmost importance. Telford now impressively boasts greens laid on a suspended water system, the same technique employed at Augusta National, and the link to Georgia's legendary golf course does not end there; 1991 US Masters winner Ian Woosnam achieved his first professional tournament victory at Telford.

The course is set within 170 acres of charming Shropshire countryside, inside the boundaries of the Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage Site, and is a fantastic place to enjoy a round of golf.

Telford's very own driving range is the perfect place to warm up and down, or to iron out those technical glitches in your swing.

Accommodation at Telford Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort

The resort has 114 bedrooms and they're exactly what you want on a golf break: spacious, comfortable and finished to a solid 4-star standard. Many rooms look out across the course and estate, which is a nice bonus if you've got an early tee time and want to see what you're up against. Expect modern essentials including flat-screen TVs and good-quality bathrooms, nothing flashy but everything you actually need after a day on the course.

The real appeal here is convenience. You're staying where you're playing, which means no early-morning drives to another course, no juggling car keys between rounds and no need to pack and unpack if you're playing multiple days. The resort setup works particularly well for groups and societies, where having everyone under one roof makes logistics simple and keeps the trip social.

Food & Drink

Food and drink are kept on-site too. The main restaurant has standout views over the Gorge and is a good shout for a relaxed dinner after golf. Breakfast is a proper cooked spread, ideal fuel before a morning tee time, and evening meals are well executed without being overly formal. For something more casual, the Gorge Bar is the natural "19th hole" for a pint, a bite and the inevitable hole-by-hole post-mortem. It's the sort of bar where you can settle in for the evening without feeling rushed, perfect for replaying the round with your mates.

Leisure Facilities

Off the course, Reflections Spa and Leisure is a genuine plus for groups and couples. There's a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and a well-equipped gym, ideal for easing the legs after a hilly round or keeping non-golfers happily occupied while you sneak in 18. It's not a destination spa, but it's more than adequate for a golf-focused break and adds real value if you're travelling with a partner who isn't playing.

If you're planning a hassle-free trip, this is the big selling point: you can play, eat, unwind and turn in, all under one roof. The Telford Golf & Spa Hotel's overall package, including the golf, leisure and conference facilities, makes it an excellent choice for a golf break in the West Midlands.

Can’t recommend Charlie Rew at YGT nor staff at Telford highly enough. Greens were exceptionally fast which didn’t suit everyone but food, wine, beer, service and golf all super. All 36 of us will return in 2020 for sure.

Greens very good. fairways a mess due to recent very heavy rain and course being on clay. No one else out though so could get a move on

The course was disadvantaged because of the weather. I would love to play it when it's not so muddy underfoot

Lovely course hard to judge greens. We had millionaire golf no one behind and no one in front on both days. Buggies pre.ordered could have been bought to the Pro Shop ready for us and they were rather dirty. Apart from that we had a thoroughly good game.
