In classic out-and-back style, the wind tends to dictate everything. The front nine is typically into the prevailing breeze, so you'll be working hard for pars and position. Turn for home and the back nine often plays with the wind, which can feel generous until you miss a fairway and the course reminds you who's in charge. The bunkering is severe, the rough is penal in summer and the greens can be seriously quick when the greenkeepers have them running at tournament pace. Miss the fairway and you will pay for it. From the back tees it's a par 72 that has been known to play to an SSS of 76, which is why it's regularly mentioned among Kent's best golf courses and even features in conversations about the hardest tracks in England.
