Found on Portugal's Atlantic coast and neighbouring the famous Oitavos Dunes, Quinta da Marinha Resort is a proper Lisbon-region favourite for golfers who want championship golf without being miles from the action. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones and, in my opinion, it's one of those layouts that keeps you honest from the first tee. It's regularly referenced as one of his standout European designs, including in our round-up of the best golf courses around Lisbon, and it's hosted a number of professional competitions over the years.

Location-wise, it's an easy win. You're around 30 minutes from Lisbon for food, nightlife and a bit of culture, and roughly 10 minutes from Cascais for that relaxed seaside feel. That makes Quinta da Marinha a smart base if your group wants great golf by day and options off the course once the last putt drops.

Accommodation is five-star throughout, with stylish rooms and balconies looking out across the course with the Sintra Mountains in the background. Whether you're travelling as a couple, a society or a family group, you've got the choice of the main hotel for convenience or self-catered villas for extra space and privacy.

Who is this for?

Golfers who want a high-quality Lisbon base with easy transfers, top golf nearby and plenty to do in Cascais and the capital.

Who is it best for?

Groups and couples who like a strategic, well-conditioned test and want spa time and strong dining options after the round.

Quinta Da Marinha Resort

The course has recently been used for a PGA Challenge Tour event, and despite its youth is a fantastic mature test. Set against the astounding backdrop of the Atlantic Coast, the course measures 6,419 yards from the championship tees, and is a terrific test for every player, be it the professionals or the average golfer.

The par-71 layout is undoubtedly a hidden gem of Europe, where you can enjoy an outstanding round of golf while you gaze over the rugged Atlantic coastline that makes Portugal's Western area so special.

Quinta da Marinha is a great place for some tuition, where the resident PGA professionals use the same technology that Tiger Woods utilises to streamline his swing.

In 2007 Quinta da Marinha hosted the best from the Challenge Tour as the venue of the Estoril Challenge de Portugal which was won by Surrey golfer Ross McGowan. McGowan's -12 total, which included a 66 in the final round, was good enough to claim the title and the 20,800 euro first prize.

Signature Hole: Hole 13, Par 4, 334 yards (White Tees), SI 8

While much of Quinta Da Marinha is threaded with beauty, boasting some stunning scenery of the Sintra mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, the 13th deserves a special mention. The luscious fairway rolls down towards the sea, before you are greeted with a green possessing some spectacular panoramic views. This picturesque par 4 is one of the most famous holes of Portuguese golf and it is to no wonder that the hole was used for many years to promote “golf in Portugal”.

Accommodation at Quinta da Marinha Resort

Quinta da Marinha gives you two good routes, depending on how your trip is shaping up. The main hotel is the easiest option if you want everything under one roof, with rooms set up for proper downtime after 18 holes. Expect private balconies, air conditioning, satellite TV and in-room safes as standard, plus those fairway and mountain views that make the morning coffee feel deserved. The setting is peaceful, the facilities are modern and the backdrop of the Sintra range gives the place a bit of character that you don't always get at resort hotels.

If you're travelling with a larger group, or you just like having your own space, the resort's 44 villas are ideal. You get a separate living area, a kitchenette for breakfasts and snacks and a larger balcony, which makes them a strong shout for longer stays and self-catered golf weeks. The layout suits societies, multi-generational groups and anyone who prefers a bit more independence without sacrificing quality or location. You're still on-site, still close to the course and still within easy reach of everything the resort offers.

Facilities-wise, the Health Club is not trying to be a mega spa, but it covers what most golfers actually use: pool, sauna, Turkish bath, gym and massage options for tight shoulders and tired legs. There's also the Ritual Spa for more treatment-led sessions if you're making this a golf and relaxation break. If you fancy moving without holding a club, guided running routes around the resort are a nice extra, particularly if you want to explore the surrounding countryside without having to plan it yourself.

Food and drink is a real plus here. Five Pines leans into Portuguese classics with a modern edge, served in a stylish dining room that works for both casual dinners and something a bit more special. Monte Mar is the seafood spot, sourcing the daily catch from local waters and preparing it with care. Cosi Fan Tutte takes care of Italian favourites in a relaxed setting. When you're done for the day, the Trent Jones Bar, named in honour of the course architect, is the obvious last stop for a nightcap and a post-round debrief. It's the sort of place where you can settle in with a drink and review the day's play without feeling rushed.

We stayed in the villas which I wouldn’t describe as villas. They were 2 bedroom apartments which were clean and adequate for our stay.the shuttle bus which was always available took us to the hotel for breakfast and the drivers were very friendly and cooperative.drinks and food was expensive which we expected being 5 star hotel plenty of choice at breakfast.

Stayed in villas which were a short minibus ride from main hotel & all facilities. Great accommodation, a little inconvenient if you want to use to the spa or pool & in the morning to go for breakfast.

Very comfortable hotel. Staff super friendly and helpful. We upgraded to a suite in the hotel for convenience rather than stay in one of the villas which are 10-15 mins walk away. Excellent breakfasts. Lots of other guests - golfers and non-golfers, mostly aged 40+ - so the hotel had a very good vibe.

We found Quinta da marinha quite tough as greens were in excellent condition and very fast.fairways were generous and course was a bit untidy in places but overall enjoyable and good value for money.

Not being able to book buggies was a concern although they did scrape enough together for us in the end. Wouldn’t have liked to have to walk it.

Unfortunately we played the course on a very windy day which did not make for enjoyable golf. There are some interesting holes but the course is a little worn, maybe a long summer.
