Prestwick St Nicholas sits on the shores of the Firth of Clyde and, while it's surrounded by some of Ayrshire's headline names, it's far more than a warm-up act. This is a proper links that's often billed as a "miniature championship course". It's only par 69 and it won't look long on the card, but it asks proper questions from the first tee.

Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club is the 26th oldest Golf Club in the world. Its rich heritage includes having Old Tom Morris as a founding member, and the golf course itself has changed little since the club moved to its present site in 1892. Lying between the Glasgow-Ayr railway line and the Firth of Clyde, the course is a traditional links course with firm, sandy turf and gorse-lined fairways.
Though not long – St Nicholas measures a little over 6,000yards – there is no shortage of difficulty; out of bounds is a factor in 12 holes, placing emphasis on accuracy and patience over brute power. This charming course is rounded off by a majestic clubhouse, and is a terrific addition to any golf tour along the Ayrshire coast.

It was a very wet day, but the course played well, with plenty of interest. The Club House is excellent and there was a very warm welcome.
