Pickalbatros Golf Club

Situated less than 20 minutes north of central Marrakech, Pickalbatros Golf Club is a 27-hole championship venue designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. If you're a bit of a course-design geek (I am), the name will jump out straight away. He's worked on Ryder Cup venues like Valderrama and Hazeltine National, and you'll see that same 'think your way round' feel here, big palm-lined sightlines, water on a handful of key holes and green sites that reward the right angle in.

Pickalbatros has welcomed golfers since 1992, making it Marrakech's second-oldest course and a popular pick for a Morocco golf holiday. The big plus for travelling groups and couples is convenience. You've got on-site accommodation and a well-established resort set-up, so sorting tee times and post-round relaxation is pretty painless.

One of the standout features is the palm grove that frames the holes. It dates back to the 11th century and, according to local history, began when soldiers of Almoravid Sultan Youssef ben Tachfine returned from the Sahara with dates. Those plantings eventually became a vast palm area that still gives the course its shade, shape and unmistakable Marrakech feel.

The 27 holes are arranged as three nine-hole loops, so you can often get a bit of variety across the week depending on the day's routing. Expect mature palms throughout with water coming into play on a few holes, so keep an eye on your lines into the greens. The course suits mid-to-low handicappers who enjoy strategic golf in a resort setting, though higher handicappers will find it playable if they manage their game sensibly.

Please note: a golf buggy or caddy is compulsory when playing the course.

Play Pickalbatros Golf Club on your next Marrakech golf break.

Who is this for? Marrakech-based golf breaks, quick winter-sun getaways, groups who want on-site golf and accommodation in one place.

Who is it best for? Golfers who enjoy tree-lined strategy, players happy to shape shots and plot their way round, mid-handicappers looking for a fair but testing resort round.

Pickalbatros Golf Club

Measuring 6,835 yards against it’s par of 72, Pickalbatros Golf Club is a course that requires guile rather than distance that is the key to playing to your handicap here. It is popular with a range of players with many couples enjoying rounds here courtesy of it’s design.

Those who are playing Golfers can expect all of the hallmarks of Morocco golf course design with lush fairways framed by the Atlas Mountains as well as mature trees that provide a unique golfing experience.

The original 18 holes at Pickalbatros Golf Club were put together by Robert Trent Jones Sr, these nines (holes 1-9 - Jbilettes, 10-18 - Atlas) were added to in 2008 with a further nine holes (19-27 - Tensift) that were designed by Stephane Talbot who also contributed to the layout that is enjoyed just South of Marrakech at PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika. The newer nine are considered to be slightly more forgiving and perfect for anyone seeking a more leisurely golfing experience.

With almost year round sunshine it is easy to see why so many head here for a winter golfing getaway. With access to a host of fantastic golf courses in the local area a round of golf at Golf Club Rotana Palmeraie is sure to be a popular choice.

Nice course - quite wide fairways so forgiving but still challenging. You need a buggy or to pay cash to a caddie - you cannot hire a trolley without a caddie. We struggled to get cash out as the resort cash machines were all faulty so had to buggy every day. Considering there are so many caddies around the bunkers are not raked and there are lots of pitch marks on the greens. However we had a great time and really enjoyed the course.

Overall the course was scruffy

Lovely course with good greens and a good mixture of holes. Plenty of exotic trees lined the fairways to make it interesting. A little scruffy off the the greens and fairways but nothing to stop me going back

It is not possible to hire a trolley - one has to hire a caddie instead (and he brings his own trolley. This limits one to carrying, or to hiring a buggy, if a caddie is not a personal preference. Tee times are not strictly adhered to, and caddies tend to press forward at a speed which is somewhat faster than might be preferred on holiday and which puts pressure on their "clients" and those in front.

We played three course while here and this was a good course with a fair test playing off the back tees. The greens were fast and true and the fairway lovely to play off of. The only let down was the clay bunkers which were poor and hard to play out of. In the whole good course and would play it again.

One of the original three courses in Marrakech and still one of the best. Very friendly staff and a nice holiday type course. Whilst there is water on the course it is sensibly placed and is acceptable. A good golfing experience enhanced by friendly staff who remembered us from previous years

First round took well under 4 hours, 2nd round just over. Course was an excellent holiday golf course, interesting but not brutal.
