Montgomerie Course at Celtic Manor

Colin Montgomerie's Ryder Cup know-how is all over this course. It's a proper thinking player's test built on dramatic elevation, with tee shots that fly over deep valleys and approaches that can drop sharply towards greens set into the landscape. Add in views across the Usk Valley and out towards the Severn Estuary and you've got a round that feels every bit as big as the scenery.

There's a definite nod to Monty's Scottish roots too. Pot bunkers sit exactly where you want to land it and the greenside swales will happily kick a slightly lazy chip back into trouble. Fairways tilt, greens perch on plateaus or sit down in hollows and you'll find yourself working out the smart side to miss as much as the perfect line in. I'll be honest, you'll hit a few shots here where you're glad you took an extra minute over the yardage.

One practical tip: the climbs and drops are no joke, so a buggy is the smart play if you want to save your legs for the golf. Club selection can change quickly here, especially when the breeze gets up. If you're staying at Celtic Manor, this one is a brilliant change of pace and a memorable round for any group.

Montgomerie Golf Course

Celtic Manor’s connection with Colin Montgomerie began long before he led his European starlets to Ryder Cup victory in 2010; in fact, he puts his name to a championship layout that’s up there with the best UK resort golf courses. Like the Roman Road, there are a few hills to negotiate but the rewards include splendid views around the resort.

The Montgomerie Course has a championship heritage with many holes being part of The Wentwood Hills Golf Course which hosted The European Tour's Wales Open between 2000 and 2004 with the remaining holes remodelled and redesigned from the Coldra Woods Golf Course. The golf course as it stands today is an excellent test with stunning undulations and views and has hosted The EuroPro Tour in 2015 as a standalone Championship venue which was won by Gary King with a 3-round -9 total.

Signature hole - No. 3: Par 5, 609 yards, SI 5

This spectacular par 5 featured in our list of "Five holes you must play" and is arguably the best on the entire resort. Despite measuring a hefty 609 yards from the tips, the second half of the tree-lined hole plunges steeply downhill, making the green an inviting target to reach in two shots. Magnificent vistas over the Usk Valley and Ryder Cup Twenty Ten course make the hole as scenically dramatic as it is challenging.
