Barnham Broom Hotel, Golf & Spa sits in 300 acres of Norfolk countryside and if you like your golf breaks with a bit of everything, it's a cracking shout. You're around 20 minutes to Norwich city centre, often nearer 15 to the outskirts, so it works just as well for a weekend society trip as it does for a couples' escape with spa time built in.

On the golf front you've got 36 holes across two very different courses. Pennink is the headline act, running alongside the River Yare in places, with tight, tree-lined corridors and greens that can get a bit sly if you're on the wrong tier. Steel is the friendlier-looking sibling, but it still asks the question, especially when you start flirting with the bunkers and the risk-reward lines.

Away from the course there's plenty to keep non-golfers happy, or to help golfers recover from 36 holes. The Spa offers a full treatment menu and The Edge fitness centre covers the basics and then some, with a gym, indoor pool, sauna, steam room plus squash and tennis. Food is strong too, from the Brasserie for a proper sit-down meal to the Sports Bar when you want something relaxed with the golf on.

If you want a UK break that mixes genuine golf with solid facilities and easy access to Norwich, Barnham Broom ticks a lot of boxes.

Who is this for?
Golfers or groups seeking a quality UK golf break that combines two contrasting championship courses with luxury hotel facilities, spa treatments and easy access to Norwich city centre and the wider Norfolk countryside.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who want to test themselves on the Pennink Course, couples looking to pair golf with spa relaxation and fine dining, mixed-ability groups wanting variety, and societies or groups wanting strong practice facilities and a sociable resort atmosphere within easy reach of East Anglia's attractions.

Golf Courses at Barnham Broom Golf Hotel & Spa

Barnham Broom is home to two superb 18-hole courses and in summer guests can take on the 36-hole golf experience, which ranks top among Norfolk's best golfing destinations.

The resort boasts the contrasting Pennink Course, a picturesque and strategic par-72 layout that meanders along the River Yare, featuring water hazards and tree-lined fairways, challenging your precision. The Steel Course is slightly more open, a par-71 parkland course that provides elevated greens, panoramic views, and a different kind of challenge, often considered slightly more forgiving than the Pennink Course.

Pennink Course

The Pennink is Barnham Broom’s flagship championship course recognised as the premium Norfolk golf experience, with a notable hole being the demanding 416-yard par-4 3rd, where the River Yare cuts diagonally across the fairway, forcing a critical tee shot and approach.

Opened in 1977 and masterfully designed by renowned architect Frank Pennink, the Par-72 layout measures approximately 6,483 yards from the back tees. The layout is set along the flowing waters of the River Yare, the course is defined by its picturesque, strategic challenge. The design makes ample use of natural contours, tree-lined fairways, undulating greens, and numerous water features, demanding precision and strategic thinking over raw power.

Steel Course

The Steel Course is characterised by its wide, more open fairways and elevated positions, which provide sweeping views over the Norfolk countryside, the 18 hole course is also playable throughout the winter months. Its elevated nature and rolling terrain make for a true parkland or heathland experience, appealing to a wide range of players.

While often considered slightly more forgiving than its sister course, it is by no means easy, with its links-style influences, including windy conditions and strategically placed bunkers. A notable hole is the Par-5 5th, which starts from an elevated tee, providing an excellent scoring opportunity if players successfully navigate the strategic challenges placed mid-fairway.

Originally designed by Frank Pennink and later revised by renowned golf architect Donald Steel, this Par-71 course measures approximately 6,495 yards from the back tees.

Closed due to weather but did not put us off as we went onn the winter course.

The day we picked was when Storm Dennis hit got absolutely soaked and wind swept only managed 5 holes. The next day they opened the winter coarse ( 15 holes on Hill course and 3 on Valley course which considering the conditions was in a good condition.

Not as interesting as the Valley Course, most holes straight just a hit and walk. The players consider it easier then the Valley Course, which was reflected in the overall score.

Due to the time of year, leaves on the fareway lead to number of lost ball lack of roll of the ball. Would love to play in the summer.

An excellent course which needs some thought playing some of the holes.

Easier than the valley course and not as interesting, could get away with wayward shots. I would say maybe the greens on this course was better but would have loved to play the valley course twice instead.
