Alhaurin Golf Course

Carved into the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas, Alhaurín Golf Club is a proper inland test within easy reach of the coast. Designed by Seve Ballesteros, it's around 30 minutes from Málaga Airport and about 20 minutes inland from Fuengirola, so it's an easy swap-in if you fancy a break from the busier resort courses down by the sea.

The course makes the most of the terrain. Fairways climb, fall and dogleg through pine-lined hillsides, and you'll feel the elevation on a few tee shots. This is Seve, so it's less about smashing driver everywhere and more about picking the right line, missing it on the correct side and trusting your course management. Expect strategic bunkering, plenty of movement in the greens and a few risk-reward moments where the safe play can still leave an awkward next shot. Water comes into play on a handful of holes, and when the breeze gets up, it can feel wonderfully exposed.

The views are the bonus you keep getting throughout the round, across the valley and out towards the Mediterranean. Off the course, there's a well-stocked pro shop, practice facilities and a terrace restaurant looking over the finishing hole and the mountains beyond.

Who is this for?

Anyone building a Costa del Sol itinerary who wants one scenic inland round, especially if your group enjoys elevation, a bit of wind and a more natural setting than the beachfront resorts.

Who is it best for?

Mid-to-low handicappers and confident ball-strikers. If you like shaping shots and thinking your way round rather than hitting driver on every par 4, you'll get more out of Alhaurín.

Include Alhaurín Golf Club on your next Costa del Sol golf break if you want scenery, elevation and a Seve layout that rewards smart golf.

Alhaurin Golf Course

The fairways have some considerable undulations, and many areas are bordered by lovely mature pine trees. Measuring 6,045 metres from the championship tees, Alhaurin demands sound strategy and course management in addition to consistent ball-striking, but even if your score card lets you down, the stunning scenery will not.

The course is regularly chosen to host local and regional tournaments, and comes highly recommended during any golf holiday in the Marbella area. Bar Hoyo 46 is the perfect golfers retreat, serving great snacks and tapas dishes.

They knew they had a party coming and yet spiked and sanded the greens the day before we arrived, some of the fairways were shocking as were course management, too many blind holes for big hitters!!, the party to a man told me not to book for next year.

Great course with very interesting holes and terrific views

Course looking tired with lots of moss on fairways, plus dangerous after some light rain in buggies as they were sliding all over the place due to the path being slick when wet and not a lot of tread on the buggy tyres. Plus they were breaking down with one abandoned by a previous group on a path crossing a fairway! Not a great experience so not playing that course again as had problems previous year as they overbooked due to a cancelled days play the day before so we had to wait an hour after our allotted tee time till buggies were returned, and one only had enough power for half a round so had to change after 9 holes.
